On November 19, we bid farewell to a pioneer in sustainable tourism, a founding member of the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center Board, and dear friend, Amos Bien. Amos was a leader in helping to establish the guidelines and criteria for sustainable tourism certification and worked with organizations such as the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and the Instrument for Environmental and Social Management (IUCN), among others.  In addition, he founded one of the first ecolodges in Costa Rica: Rara Avis, located in Sarapiquí, not far from Selva Verde Lodge. Amos was also a trained population ecologist.
